9. Exploring Station 3: Residential Area

Click on the Display Map and choose Station 3.

This primary land-use in this area is housing developments.

Notice that the nitrogen levels here are high, but not as high as in Agriculture (many homeowners fertilize their lawns)

Select Indicator

Q8. Describe how D.O. and Water Temperature are related.
(hint: click on draw Scatterplot to better view this relationship)

Compared to a forest, housing developments have many fewer trees. Fewer trees mean less shade and  higher air temperatures which lead to higher water temperatures. The higher the water temperature the less oxygen the water can hold.

When oxygen levels drop below 5 mg/L fish are stressed.

Q9. Which season of the year and which days(from graph) would you expect fish to be most stressed?
Why?

Run-off from warm driveways, streets and roofs further increase water temperature in streams and can cause a very sudden temperature shock after a rain storm.

Read about the Suggested Improvement,
then click on Implement Improvement to better manage the land-use.

Q10. Describe how D.O. has been improved (for evidence refer to the graph).
